“Give me da ball,” Flex yelled. I passed it with a bounce. He dribbled on some fancy shit, making his way to the hop. He attracted the double team. That didn’t stop him though. I waited for the ball to come back but it never did. Flex got plucked on his way up to the basket. Instead of getting back on defense, he yelled some more: “Fuck!” He left the rest of the team and myself running down the court on our own. The game was over. “Maine, fuck dat game!” Flex concluded before anyone else could say a word. “Where da hoes at?”

This was ten years ago on the whole court in Jackson Ward. We were barely teenagers. A Dodge Hemi Charger came zooming up the street of Saint John, blasting ‘Wipe Me Down’ by Trill Fam. “Ohhh—Der go my car!” Flex was livid, sounding like the child he was.

“Shut up, nigga!” a voice said, creeping from behind us. A young Hawk and his flunkies were traveling across the basket ball court. “Yo ass ain’t gone never get a car like dat. And why da fuck y’all niggas on my court anyway?”

“Yo’ court?” I asked, jumping into my emotions. “Nigga, dis our shit.” Technically it wasn’t, but it was. We lived right there. Hawk and I went back and forth for a short moment. Flex remained quiet. I knew that if he wasn’t talking then he was plotting. Blu picked up our basket ball that was resting on the concrete. After taking a few bounces, he cocked it back and tossed the ball on the roof of a three story building. Flex rushed him. I went for Hawk. Eventually, a Royal Rumble had exploded. Shit got so hectic that the police even had a hard time breaking the fights up. It took four shots to go off down the street to calm the crowd.
